Education focused on process, psychology & risk management
Friday looked worse than the evidence underneath. Short-term yields and the US dollar jumped sharply, but longer-term bonds were far calmer, the VIX fell into the 14s and several important areas of the market remained resilient.
This is increasingly an earnings and expectations market. Strong results alone are no longer enough. Stocks can beat substantially and still fall if expectations have moved too far ahead.
AI demand remains extremely strong. The infrastructure build-out continues, but the market is becoming more selective and is increasingly looking beyond the obvious technology names for the next beneficiaries.
Resources were caught in Friday’s rate and currency reaction. Gold and silver were hit hard, while copper continues to present one of the strongest structural commodity narratives.
Volatility makes process more important, not less. Purpose, timeframe, position size and risk management need to be established before the market forces a decision on you.
What you’ll learn
Why Friday’s abrupt selloff did not neatly fit a broad risk-off event.
Why the bond market, VIX and individual stock behaviour told a more nuanced story than the headline move.
Why expectations now matter as much as earnings growth when the market assesses results.
How the AI opportunity is starting to broaden into finance, industrials, healthcare and other non-technology sectors.
Why sudden volatility can improve reward for risk without providing any guarantee about what happens next.
The thinking shift
A dramatic price move is information, but it is not an instruction to act. Friday gave us a sharp reaction in prices, short-term yields and the US dollar. The job now is to assess whether the broader evidence confirms a genuine change in trend.
That means looking beneath the indices at money flows, volatility, bond markets, volume and the behaviour of individual stocks. Trying to predict the next move is far less useful than being prepared to respond when the evidence becomes clear.
What history shows
Volatile markets regularly produce short-term moves that appear far more important in the moment than they eventually prove to be. They can also produce genuine changes in trend. The difficulty is knowing which one you are seeing in real time.
That is why I prefer confirmation over prediction. Understand why you own an investment, determine your timeframe and weighting in advance, then let the money flows help determine whether anything meaningful has actually changed.
Where I’m focused now
US follow-through: Friday was abrupt. What matters now is whether the selling develops into something broader or proves to be a short-term reaction.
AI earnings: Demand remains powerful, but the standard of proof has risen. Stock selection and understanding expectations are becoming increasingly important.
Broader AI beneficiaries: I’m spending more time looking beyond the obvious technology names for businesses using AI to improve efficiency, margins and competitive advantage.
Precious metals: Gold and silver were hit by Friday’s sharp move in rates and the US dollar. The next price action will tell us more than trying to predict the low.
Copper: The structural narrative remains particularly strong and the underlying price chart continues to warrant close attention.
